To my fellow associates, comrades, and citizens of Rome:
Darkness has coated itself upon us! A looming shadow has encased us in an ever looming weld of despair. To what may be the cause? Why, it is none other than our own Julius Caesar who casted forth this menacing aura. No man other than him could possibly stand so high above us that he himself can no longer be considered one of us, let alone human. The abomination known as Caesar is slowly corrupting the very heart of Rome, and it is because of this that I ask for your support.
Many have fallen under the impression that Julius Caesar is possibly the greatest man on earth and immortal ruler of Rome. Let it be known however that he is not as he seems. He is cruel, relenting, and uses the title “Dictator for Life” as a net to encase all of Rome under his influence. What many of you wonder at the moment is the overall reasoning behind removing Caesar. I speak on behalf of every Roman citizen when I say that Caesar will and will continue to bring sorrow toward us. Pain, pain, and more pain are all that we must bear in this era of Caesar’s rule!
The wealthy, the commons, even the soldiers have something to fear from Caesar. He takes wealth from the aristocrats, and covets their wives. With the upper class removed, the middle will replace them only to once again be stomped down by Caesar. Slaves and servants can never be free, for if Caesar himself utilizes human labor, it will be permitted throughout Rome. The soldiers who served as Caesar's hand will all but crumble under his rule. They all die in vain for it is Caesar that takes credit for their victories and their lives. We all lose in grand scheme of things. The future of Rome lies within we, the people. Happiness can be achieved by us and only us! Rome is only as strong as the Romans inhabiting it!
If we were to give Caesar the old fashion boot off the throne, we could all benefit from a better Rome. To the nobles, let not your wealth be lost. The commons shall live lives like they should, normal and happy. Slaves will no longer be bound in chains. Those who seek Caesar for protection can now learn that we the people can help ourselves! Soldiers whom are better respected for their victories (instead of Caesar hogging the spotlight) will be more than willing to devote themselves to the people of Rome, at three times the efficiency!
With everything put into this certain perspective I hope to have lessened Caesar’s overall appeal. Caesar can be defeated, but only with your help. With this final decree I once again beg for your assistance in bringing down Caesar. Before you come to a verdict, think of Rome. We the Roman republic need not a foul dictator nor a king. We shall become united with the defeat of the vile Caesar!
May you come to a righteous decision,
Jonathan Pham, Johnson Luu,
Dillon Roberts, Calvin Lai,
Dominic Redwater
Presentation Outline:
Our group will be performing a skit which shows the negative aspects of keeping Caesar in power. Each member of the group will play a roman social class: Jonathan Pham (Senator), Dominic Redwater (Plebian), Dillon Roberts (Slave/Patrician), Johnson Luu (Equestrian), and Calvin Lai (Soldier). While the senator addresses his claim against Caesar, the other roman social classes will hide within the audience. one by one they will come up to argue for Caesar, only to be turned against him. Toward the end all of the classes will agree that Rome should be without Caesar, as his political imbalance could potentially destroy them all.
Prop Proposal:
The prop that we will be using is a Gladius (broadsword). The overall structure consists of an iron blade mounted on a sleek wooden handle for support. Visually, it would appear as any other hand wielded weapon. Function wise however its performance is mediocre. (It’s a prop, its fake.) One may wonder why a sword would be used as a tool to remove Caesar since it resembles a form of violence. The true meaning behind this blade however lies not in its ability to kill, but really in its ability to prove a point. The Gladius itself can actually be comparative to the current situation in Rome. The sword’s blade represents Caesar, a cruel instrument of destruction capable of murder and various other wicked deeds. The people of Rome are the swords wooden base. Compared to Caesar, the people of Rome are inferior. The glorious edge of the sword shines with glory as the wooden handle simply falls behind every swing or strike. The people of Rome follow behind Caesar as he basks in wealth, when in reality it is the people that serve as the foundation of Caesar. A blade is nothing without its base, just as Caesar is nothing without his people. The overall effect of the sword will show reason toward the people of Rome. By realizing Caesar requires their support, they will gain confidence in themselves. Instead of cowering under Caesar like a god, they will treat him as an equal. The sword will give the people a better understanding of the situation, proving that Caesar is as ordinary as any of them. If Caesar is removed from power and becomes their equal, Rome can truly call itself a democracy.
